Alone is Not Always Loneliness

Hello, darklings.

I got my workout done yesterday by going around and plucking up cockleburs and burdocks. The poor cats and even the dogs have been getting burrs all over them, and I thankfully caught the burdocks while their burrs were still green.

My roommate is moving out soon. She’s been and remains my dear best friend, and this comes at just the right time, as the Universe often manages. She met someone who has their own house and stability, and they honestly seem super good for each other. I can breathe easier, trusting she will be safe and flourish there.

And, like, she’s going to be a five minute drive from me, so bonus!

I think we both have moving jitters, her especially, but also looking forward to change. There’s a lot of work the house needs that will be easier with an extra room to shuffle, which can then be turned into an office, library, lounge—I dunno, I’ll figure it out. Hopefully I can get some energy saving upgrades accomplished. Eventually, I’ll need to rip up a big chunk of the floor. Bit by bit, I’ll make this my little cozy goth cottage.

Many times people are like “You’ll be alone?” Well, no. I do have a roommate who lives in a tiny shed house just across the lawn. My 21-year-old spawn will also be about at times, as he lives partly here and partly at his grams helping out there. Also, if anyone were to try to break in here… (Looks at Newt and Sirius, 65 and 85 lb dogs respectively.) Yeah, I’m not really worried about that.

But overall, I honestly really thrive when I live by myself.

I get more creative, I have more up and go to doll up the place. I make plans and execute them better. I actually want to go out sometimes to see others, and I take better care of my health.

See, I’m not fearful of being by myself. I’m often much more fretful when I’m around people too much.

Don’t get me wrong—I am an extremely extroverted introvert. I’m not shy on most things, and I do love going out and meeting with other creative minds, having coffee, shooting the breeze, dancing and karaoke. But what makes me an introvert is that I cannot regain energy by being around people. It may be fun, and I may enjoy it, but it saps the energy from me.

I mean, come on, I got worlds in my head full of people that keep me hopping as it is. Adding real life world to it where I have to try to mask as a semi-normalish person? (Raspberry)

I’ll just have to keep snuggling all these cats. Woe is me. ;)

Working On:

My writing buds and I have been indulging in a July gift exchange. This has been wonderful fun, as we did a trope exchange and are writing from each other’s trope wish list. I wrote some fanfic, some original, and I hope to polish one of the presents up to set as a writing sample. Should be fun!

Writing short stories is just way easier with a prompt.

Research History This Week That May Have Put Me on a List (or confused whoever monitors me):

  • Wolf eye color (fun fact, wolves never have blue or brown eyes unless they’re mixed with dogs.)

  • Nose shapes

  • Longswords vs bastard swords vs great swords

  • Pauldron and greave designs

  • Leather armor vs chainmail

  • How long would someone survive a blood eagle (not long!)

  • What the buttons on furniture cushions are called (tufting, or tufted buttons—you should see the size of the needle they use.)

Writing Whoops:

I typed in earthshake instead of earthquake and couldn’t figure out why spellchecker thought it was wrong.

Things my AI bot has overheard:

  • Stop playing in the chainsaw box!”

  • I want the thick black one.”

Beasties Update:

Sirius continues to be happy and well.

Baby Hecate, the girl tabby kitten I’m keeping, continues to worm her little way in the black space my heart should be.

Newt broke her lead again. Her 300 lb lead that I’ve had about six months. Snapped it right in the middle. You’d think bad knees would slow her down. Noooo. Thankfully, once we realized she was gone and called her, she came trotting happily back from the neighbor’s yard.

Watching and Reading: Currently I’m ARC reading Thacher E. Cleveland’s soon to come out Shadow of Victory, an addition to their Winston and Churchill Case Files. So far, been having a blast with it. The dialogue is funny and the creepy stuff is creepy!

Write hard, corvids.
