Another year has gone by, and I find myself in awe upon realizing that 2025 will see us a full quarter century into the new millennium. I know saying this will make me seem old to some potential readers, but I still remember the turn from 1999 to 2000 like it was yesterday.
It's hard to believe, when I think about it, but the world was a completely different place just 25 years ago. In 1999, the internet was a new and magical thing, and we were heading into the golden age of people discovering for the first time that they could post anything they wanted if they had the motivation to do so. Since then, the internet has been rather thoroughly taken over by AI, to the point that if we look at something, our first question has to be: “is that just another AI generated thing?”
It’s funny. I didn’t know how much I loved that very basic human connection until it was buried under an avalanche of imitation humans. There is something truly special about looking at the wild, amazing, quirky, and brain-breaking things the internet would produce when I knew that someone had taken the time to lovingly create everything on it. There was a person behind each image, every video, and song, and line of text. Magical. It just isn’t the same when a machine, incapable of grasping the implications of its spontaneously generated product, made a thing. It feels hollow.
More concerning, as a creative type, I look at artists and writers trying to get a foot in the door of internet popularity, and I see them struggling… just to be seen through the stampede of AI content. It’s a daunting prospect, to think that if we wish to get out there, we must now compete with machines, and while they can’t quite produce the quality we can, they more than make up for it in quantity.
But… I am ever the optimist. Where there is a will, there is a way, and I never went into this thinking it would be easy. I expect to fail in my path to getting my content seen. Many times. I aim to learn from those failures, for I know that hidden behind each unsuccessful attempt, there lies an opportunity to grow. Growth is the key to success. The ability to evolve and adapt to the ever changing world is learned by falling down, so I will keep at it, and venture undaunted into the new world. I will fall and I will get up, and I will keep at it, and eventually, I will succeed.
And I will continue to adapt, because who knows what kind of world the future holds? The only thing I know for sure is that what is will not be, and what will be is impossible to see. But with dedication and perseverance, it doesn’t matter. Because I will get there. And so can you, Stardust, if it is your dearest wish to manifest that kind of reality. We can write our own stories, even if we have no say over what the tides of time bring into the world.
