Tremendicon!

Hello Darklings! Sorry I'm late on the blog post. I had a busy weekend and been recovering from socializing. Tremendicon was great fun, though. I tend to really love the smaller conventions that are more focused on the crafts and arts than selling big media.

Per usual, I spent too much on books. I am not sorry. I just hope I actually sit my butt down and read them this year so we can get some good suggested indie titles out for you flockers.

Again, talking to other writers makes me realize just how many options we have as writers to get our work published these days. Before, you had to be in the same city as the publishers, and even when distance coordination was possible, there was so much gatekeeping and market pushing that made it difficult for an author to get published at all. Currently, even trad published authors are finding that jumping ship allows them more control over their work and the ability to get their full series to their avid readers.

And that's a big thing to me. I want my writing to help people get through life, to spark wonder, determination, and the joy of beating the odds. I want my books to get to them anytime they want, in book exchanges, libraries, used bookstores, on demand print, all of that. I want them to have hard cover, paperback, e-book, and audio, if possible. I definitely don't want a publishing company to just... take a book out of print and render it unavailable to read.

So I know I must be careful in my consideration for publishing contracts and how I choose to distribute my work. I know some ways require more work and out of pocket costs. I know no way is really wrong (unless it's a vanity press--flock those guys!), that each has their pros and cons, and that the market is really just a vast field of fluctuating luck that is always changing.

We're not sure how we'll publish. We know it's something we need to consider and research once our books are polished and ready for submission. No matter what way we choose, we will be releasing our books into the wild, and I hope, dear reader, that it helps you get through your day better if any of ours falls into your lap.

Write and read hard, corvids!

What's Lurking in my Google Search: Baby names meaning prophet or seer, artist contracts, military ranks for science and tech specialists, accents and how to describe them, Old West timeline and evolution of the cowboy look.

Mistakenly Used Word: Implacable. I thought this meant that something was hard to define or categorize. It really means stubborn, callous, and the inability to be appeased.

Beastie Update: J. Argo is getting the black kitten settled in its new home. Lucy (the kitten) has shown he's still utterly fearless around dogs and greeting other cats and is settling super well with his new family. His two siblings will hopefully be lucky and find such good homes. And this week, I'm doing a Parent Trap and getting their feral mum and dad fixed Wednesday.

Working On: I had another short story pop into my head today, so quickly wrote down the bones of it, and will hopefully be another good one to enter into a contest. Otherwise, still editing the other two stories I have and will hopefully be able to get them to nitty gritty editing and beta read soon.

Watching and Reading: I finished up 9-1-1 and going to put aside watching for some reading. I've a bunch of sweet looking new books, including the second Harrow County omnibus, Sixth Gun, the legacy of Lucky Logan series, and many more just begging to be read.

See you later, birdies.
